  • It's always fun to beat on your creation, especially when it's a little left of center of what other's are doing.

    • I can attest, Yoshida is feral!
Forest Hill hasn't seen, heard or smelled anything like that in years.
That was a great ride Sim, some work on the suspension and a gas mask and your ready to go.

      • Not much of an update right now - Yoshida is still in flat back, still original brakes and suspension, and she still drives. Drove her to work today.

I do have a question about fumes though.

We all know these vehicles suffer from exhaust fumes coming into the cabin. Mine is especially bad due to all my rubber seals in the back end being removed or deteriorated. However I just want to make sure that is my only problem. Let's talk gas tank.

I don't have a charcoal canister or expansion tank. Just the original gas tank, with the VH45DE fuel pump and sender in the top. The additional ports off the tank (for the expansion tank) are routed into one another so it should be sealed. I only fill the tank $20 at a time, so I'm only 1/3rd full at most.

The cabin smells of the usual exhaust fumes, but also more gasoline fumes than I would expect. It could just be coming out the tail pipe when it runs rich... or I'm missing something elementary. I'm going to go over the whole tank again to check for leaks etc. Am I doing something more stupid than usual?

        • Imagine this: you're sitting in a small Z which is painted flat black, in one of the hottest summers, stuck in traffic on most highways in Toronto, and the mostly unsilenced 3" exhaust of your V8 is roaring through the cabin because it is having idling issues. when warmed up, it seems to sit at 1500 RPM, which in most cars would be permissible, and largely unnoticeable, but in your Datsun, it drones like an aggravated monster.

If you can imagine, it's been unnecessarily stressing me out. The car gives me the indication it wants to go, but instead it's stuck behind some Prius. It just will not chill out.

To compound that, the exhaust (as you know gets into the cabin) smells much richer than it should be. So rich I thought it was the fuel tank leaking.

SO, I began poking around. I thought I had a pretty good handle on where everything is, as I assembled everything, but lo and behold, there are two vacuum lines which were disconnected and hanging loosely. They came off what I think was the VH45 charcoal canister, and with that eliminated, it was sucking in fresh air.

This morning I quickly kinked them, zip-tied them, and drove into work. BOOM, steady idle, less smelly - MUCH more enjoyable. sits below 1000 RPM like it should.

          • Man, you gotta show up at Zcon on Wed. morning for the concourse judging, just pull that wild creature right up next to all those perfectly anemic original cars, rev it up to the red line for a few seconds before shutting it down then walk over to the registration table with a straight face and attempt to enter her in the stock class. In my mind I have Sacha Baron Cohen playing you and the absolute indignation
he would display in a very public manner when told to get the car out of the judging circle. Laughing just thinking about it.
Are you bringing her to the big car show on the Saturday?

Yeah, I think I'll drop by, but there was some entrance fees of $X and I thought to myself "hmmmmm... I could pay money to see other cars like mine.... OR I could buy more parts for my car". Tough choice, I know.

So can I just show up and shoot the ****? Or is there an entrance fee for everything?

                • Zcon officials please feel free to jump in here but I think you pay to enter your car in the different shows, track event and so on but I believe you can go watch the concourse judging for free. The peoples choice/Zfest car show there is also a fee to enter your Z but not if you are a walk in.

                  • People's choice show at Bruce's Mill Conservation area will require only the $7.00 park entrance fee to spectate. Judged show at the hotel, no fee, except hotel parking unless you walk in.
